About the Author
Coming from a line of small business owners on both sides of the family, Mitzi McCartha
finally took the plunge and became her own boss after opening her first retail bead shop in
2005. Having worked as a nurse for eighteen years, it was time to make a change. Three
previous years of beading as a hobbyist soon turned into an idea that opening a bead shop
would allow for fun in both the business and jewelry designing aspects. Opening a shop
was not her first experience in dabbling with small business. Her first encounter in the retail
world began in 1995; it included selling gifts and antiques in local antique malls. After five
years in the antique’s industry, the next venture focused on a service-oriented business,
wedding video production. Two years of lugging around heavy video equipment became
rather burdensome, and this endeavor came to an end.
A brief hiatus ensued, but it was not long until the entrepreneur bug bit again. Never would
she dream of a business in beading. Who ever heard of such a thing! Nevertheless, the
attempts to create a calorie counting bracelet for use in Weight Watchers® was the
springboard for the greatest career move of her life. Starting out as a hobbyist, and making
bridal jewelry for a couple of local bridal shops, the desire to create a full-time business
became even stronger. Visualizing the end goal, a business that could be fun as well as
profitable, Stardust Designs Bead Shoppe was born.
Located in Nashville, Tennessee, Stardust Designs Bead Shoppe is a full service bead store,
offering jewelry design classes, as well as a host of glass and gemstone beads and findings.
Many customers come in not only to buy beading materials and to take classes, but to also
get advice on how to sell their jewelry!
